Remove the two screws that hold the speedometer motor in place. From experience, the most common failure point is the instrument cluster. My car is good now. I would think the problem is the VSS, not anything in the cluster.... You say that you eventually determined you just had to cange the little wheel - my question to you is - how do you get at the back of the speedometer I didn't notice if it affected my odo or not (it probably did). I think mine is a gauge problem since if its not working and I'm going 40-60mph I can bang on the gage cluster and it will start working again. If that doesn't work, replacing the cluster (or just the gauge) is step 3.
