There's a chance that the problem is with the camera and not the lens. You didn't mention whether it had ever auto-focused before or if it just stopped focusing. Modern mid-grade to high end AF-S lenses: Soft touch, "endless", not-turning-during-AF focusing ring and M/A-M switch: can focus manually in any mode, and automatically if AF is enabled on both the http://cestudios.net/not-working/nikon-d80-af-not-working.html I've bought one from ebay, but has some minor problems.
