With the lens set to AF, it does nothing, but makes a slight whirring sounds as if the camera is trying to, but can't focus the lens. But I know there are some sample D7000 out there that have really bad AF calibration problems, similar to what I am seeing with the D800. Share ... Share ...
Some lenses also have an AF/MF switch on the lens itself, also ensure this has not been accidentally set to M/F.
