REAR also engages SLOW, but SLOW doesn't light up on the LCD until you take your finger off the flash mode button. Bad plan. Make sure the built-in flash is up. In Program and A exposure modes, the shutter won't stay open longer than about 1/60 second.

REAR doesn't do anything with short exposures. I personally don't care one whit about it, but some people are personally offended by that particular phrase. According to my notes, that is normal behavior for the D300 and earlier bodies. They are very helpful. This works best, IMO, how flash ought to be (i.e., Auto ISO off).
